We are thrilled to announce the successful conclusion of our highly anticipated Hospitality & Tourism Race! This interactive and engaging event brought together students from all cohorts, including DHO, DATO, ADHTM (Year 1 & 2), BDIHM, MBA, and UWL, to embark on a unique learning journey designed to cultivate teamwork, industry knowledge, and hands-on experience in the hospitality and tourism sectors.
Event Highlights and Objectives
The Hospitality & Tourism Race aimed to foster collaboration among students from different programs, enriching their understanding of key hospitality and tourism concepts. Throughout the event, students participated in fun, educational challenges that enhanced their appreciation of Singapore’s dynamic hotel industry and various attractions across the city.
This event allowed students to:
- Collaborate across cohorts, fostering teamwork and leadership.
- Experience firsthand the intricacies of the hospitality industry, from hotel operations to guest services.
- Explore sustainable tourism practices and understand their growing importance in the industry.
Learning Outcomes Achieved
Each cohort had the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge to real-world tasks, making the race a powerful tool for experiential learning. Here’s how the race aligned with the key learning outcomes for each group:
- DHO – Housekeeping: Students demonstrated a solid understanding of the functional areas of housekeeping and rooms division, applying it during their hotel visits.
- ADHTM Year 1 – Travel, Tourism & Hospitality: They explored different types of businesses in the hospitality industry and compared current trends.
- ADHTM Year 2 – Sustainable Tourism Planning & Development: Year 2 students examined the principles of sustainable tourism, particularly in developing countries and global tourism trends.
- BDIHM – Geopolitics: Students contrasted international events and analyzed geopolitical risks affecting the industry.
- MBA – Marketing Management: Students applied marketing strategies, such as product segmentation and pricing, in practical scenarios throughout the race.
Activities and Tasks
Students engaged in various tasks posted on Padlet, which required them to investigate and share findings on key industry practices, such as sustainability initiatives implemented by hotels. They also documented their experiences on social media, using our SISH hashtags to raise awareness of the learning journey.
The aviation students focused on exploring Singapore’s renowned attractions, adding another layer of real-world understanding of tourism dynamics. Whether exploring hotel operations, sharing photos of eco-friendly practices, or reflecting on their race experiences, every student walked away with a deeper connection to the industry.
