“One Time Plastic” Poster Assignment

We are delighted to announce the winner group for the “One Time Plastic” poster assignment initiated by lecturer Mr Barry Hayes. This assignment aims to create awareness of plastic pollution and the detrimental environmental effects it causes. Students are assigned to different groups and given time to research on environmental concerns and data. They then have to design a poster with powerful visuals or copywriting to spread awareness of ‘One Time Plastic”, take action and reduce their plastic footprint.

The Winner

This poster goes beyond social awareness to encourage audiences to engage in step by step social actions; skip the straw, use a cloth bag, recycle, reuse, say no to plastic bags, and more. This poster is simple yet informative. A good poster should be able to educate individuals to engage in real actions for sustainable social change. The team consists of ADHTM students; Anish Seshadri and Udith Lakshda. Congratulations, guys! The winning team walked away with $30 NTUC vouchers.

What is One Time Plastic and why is it a major problem?

Single-use plastics, or disposable plastics, are used only once before they are thrown away or recycled. These items are very common things we see daily such as plastic bags, straws, water bottles and many food packaging. About 300 million tons of plastic waste is generated each year (Wassener, 2011) – and the bad news is this is growing each year. According to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, plastic pollution “has become one of the most pervasive pollution problems facing the world’s oceans and waterways .” The excessive use of plastic straws, plastic bags, plastic packaging is doing great damage to the environment and natural habitats for wildlife. This poster assignment reminds us to skip the straw, use a cloth bag, recycle, reuse, say no to plastic bags! In the event when you happened to have a disposable plastic, try creative ways to re-use and re-purpose them!
